North American Divisions Response to Katrina
Editor: Kandus Thorp, Assistant to the Director, Adventist Television Network
Winds, rain, and flooding ravaged the Gulf Coast region late August with the never forgotten Hurricane Katrina. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Hurricane Katrina caused physical and economic disruption over many areas in the four states of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
Seventh-day Adventist members and churches were affected tremendously through this natural disaster. A total of 30 churches felt the wrath of Katrina, which included 6,000 displaced Adventists. Each conference worked with the national office of Adventist Community Services (ACS) in Silver Spring, Md., to access the damage and develop a plan of action.
On Friday, October 28, the Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America will give a detailed report on its response to members affected by Hurricane Katrina as well as how the Adventist Church helped others in its communities. The report will be taped during the North American Divisions Year-end Meetings and will be aired on the Hope Channel during the months of October and November.
