Although I live in an out-of-town retirement village and love it, retirement has had some challenges. But God knows our problems and helps us to cope and get our situation sorted out.
Often, when we think about retiring as we near our sixty-fifth year, there are questions that can bother us: What am I going to do now? What am I going to do to keep occupied? How am I going to cope financially?
It’s been more than 10 years since I “officially” retired. I am grateful that the Lord guided me into missionary service for more than two years. I am grateful that I managed, with His help, to plan ahead. I am grateful for reasonably good health and can include some daily walking. I am grateful for being able to still be busy, grateful for no boring or dull moments. I am still willing to be involved where needed. Presently I work at our primary school library two mornings a week, and I do a lot of crocheting and some knitting for charity sales or for the needy.
I am grateful, too, for the quiet, peaceful, hilly area in which we live, away from city hustle and bustle. When I first came here, I was intrigued with the quantity and variety of beautiful butterflies that flew around, and I continue to enjoy them.
I am also grateful for the buddy system we have that keeps us in touch with one another so that we can help each other when needed in the garden, with transport, or for just a friendly visit. On my birthday my two buddies, both older than I, came over and sang “Happy Birthday,” although they had given me cards and gifts earlier.
Since retirement I have been a volunteer executive secretary at an overseas Christian hospital, communication secretary, church ministry secretary, and church clerk in my church, and have spoken at worship and prayer meetings when asked.
Two of my daughters live very far away, but my third daughter is only a 40-minute drive from me. She and her family do come and visit when possible, so I am very grateful for their visits.
Where God guides, He certainly provides.
